What I’m Reading – Melissa Cusack

I’ve always loved the holiday season, especially the time in between Thanksgiving and New Years. It’s always the best time to curl up with a great book, magazine, or newspaper article and a hot cup of tea.

If you ask me, there has been a lot to read about! Everything from the latest WikiLeak drama, to Derek Jeter’s Yankee contract, and Time’s Person of the Year (congrats Mark!) has served as great reading material. It’s hard to choose just one thing to read. Hence, I’ve split my time between reading the latest technology news and the latest pop culture blogs. Here’s what I’m reading:

Mark Zuckerberg – Person of the Year 2010. It has been quite the year for Mark. Just seven years ago, he was a 19-year-old sophomore at Harvard working on Thefacebook.com. Now, in 2010, Facebook has over 550 million members, with approximately 700,000 people joining every day. According to the Time article, “If Facebook were a country it would be the third largest, behind only China and India.”

It’s crazy to think that what was supposed to be an “online directory that connects people through social networks at college” has become the biggest thing to happen to the Internet. I remember when Facebook was just a way to connect college students. But now, it seems like anyone with email address has created an account, even your mom!

YouTube Trends  –For those overwhelmed by the 35 hours of video uploaded to YouTube every minute, Google has come up with a solution. The search engine will now give you "what's poppin', as it's ‘poppin' (or, the "recommended daily dose of all the best in online video") via YouTube Trends.

The way it works is this: YouTube Trends algorithmically generates feeds that give the YouTube user top-trending topics and videos. And, as if that weren’t enough, YouTube Trends will also come with a blog with posts that seek to bring the user more insights about the videos and trends.

“The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” – I just finished reading the series (three books in total) and really enjoyed them. It’s an award-winning crime series novel by Swedish author and journalist Stieg Larsson. Without giving too much away, the books feature a middle-aged investigative journalist and a youthful computer hacker struggling with personal demons.

One of the more interesting facts about the series is that the story is presumed to emulate Stieg Larsson’s personal life. Not only that, but he mysteriously went missing and died right before the novels were published.

Hollywood Couples
– I couldn’t submit a blog post without adding a small section on pop culture! It seems like every couple in Hollywood is splitting up, from Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds, to Eva Longoria Parker and Tony Parker. Is anyone celebrating the holidays with their significant other?

It’s just sad to think that these couples didn’t last. I never would have expected it – at least not until January.
