Tough Times for Media

I see a lot of this these days, but yesterday I heard more sad news about the state of media. RCR Wireless, a publication which many of us here at Breakaway had worked with on many occasions on behalf of our clients, announced that it will suspend publication. The announcement came on late Tuesday afternoon and involved both the biweekly print publication and the RCRWireless.com site. Twenty staff members were laid off as a result of the decision.

Throughout the last couple of months my colleagues and I have seen more and more of these changes taking place and wonder “so what does this mean for us?”

As a PR professional, I work hand-in-hand with the media on client coverage, launches and events so I am definitely feeling the effects of these changes. On top of that, many journalists become so much more than just a person who covers the news. I know that I am not alone when I say that many of the reporters I work with have become friends, colleagues and people I enjoy interacting with on a regular basis. So, to see the list of reporters becoming smaller and smaller is definitely hard to swallow.

My fingers are crossed that there is a light at the end of the tunnel for the many media changes this industry is seeing. Here’s hoping…
