Take us out to the Ballgame...

This is my first official post for the Breakaway Communications blog, and I’m proud to be speaking as one of many new members of our team. Just as in the fast paced world of tech media, things are moving more and more quickly at the agency, especially as 2010 shapes up to be busier and busier. Since I’ve joined Breakaway, I’ve learned about technologies I didn’t even know existed

such as RFID explored some new corners of the web, met a bunch of really cool people and ramped up my conversational fluency on some pretty technically complicated subjects, not all of which are client related. Still, despite all the hard work going on here, we wouldn’t want our readers to think we were all business, now would we?

One of the perks of working at Breakaway San Francisco is our location right next to beautiful AT&T Park, home of my favorite team, the San Francisco Giants. I’ve probably been to well over half of our home games this season, and I don’t see that attendance rate decelerating any time soon, so you can imagine how excited I was when we as a team decided to pay the ballpark a visit.

The June 30 game was special for a few reasons. First – it marked the first Breakaway summer offsite of 2010; second – day baseball is rarer and rarer these days, mainly because of the teams’ desire to sell more tickets and gain more ad revenue. Consequently games have become something of a nostalgic experience for many people. Finally, the game concluded the year’s first rivalry series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, who are universally reviled among Giants fans.

I was looking forward to rubbing a victory in the face of all the Dodger fans in attendance (including Devan G. and Marie D.!), but of course, the game turned out to be one of the most disappointing performances by the Giants all year. The Dodgers got off to an early lead, but with the exception of a ninth inning home run, the Giants could barely get on base the whole game. When I returned to the office after the game, my cube was covered in Dodgers logos, with Devan, a Breakaway colleague, playing the role of the typical, unrepentant, gloating Dodger fan. I’ll have the last laugh though I’ve decided to get a giant red marker to cross a “NO” sign over the logo - I actually think it will increase my productivity.
