New York: Will it Remain the Media Capital of the World?

Yellow cabs, skyscrapers and a Starbucks at nearly every corner...these are some of the defining elements that spring to mind when I think of New York City.

Being a New Yorker truly has its advantages, so I was really excited to find out that Internet Week 2009 would be celebrating the Big Apple’s thriving Internet community.  For seven days the city streets were bustling with fun events surrounding the technology industry, such as conferences on strategies in social media, cloud computing meetups and panel discussions on the future of media.

As a Breakaway team member, I am always encouraged to learn more about the industry by attending industry events. With all the buzz over social media and my own thoughts on the "death of the newspaper," I decided to kick off my adventure at Internet Week with an event titled “Media in NYC in 2020”.

This session provided a lot of insight into the current state of the media industry, especially as it relates to New York. The city's position as a global media center is being challenged because the rising costs of doing business will play a major role in shaping which companies are based here over the next decade.  However, I learned that there are still many opportunities for New York to remain a global media center in the future, especially because of the enormous legacy of talented New Yorkers and the trend towards basing start-ups here.

The panelists at the event, including Jon Klein, president of CNN/US, believe that consumers' time and money spent on media will increase over the next decade, but that different areas of focus will emerge as new tech products come to market. I'm always on the look-out for these new gadgets that are making it so much easier for us all to get our news!

Media will change, in NYC and everywhere else, as the gap between digital immigrants, those who are still adopting this new world, and digital natives such as myself, who are growing up surrounded by technology, closes.

NYC is definitely positioned as a global media center, but we'll have to wait and see if it will remain "THE global media capital" of the world!
