Because I’m living in a high-tech world…

So far, being an intern here at Breakaway Communications has opened my eyes to the real world of public relations. Though my education at CSU, Chico gave me the skills and foundation that have helped me survive thus far, I cannot begin to explain how much I have learned about PR while on the job this last month.

Semiconductors, WLAN, the cloud, VoIP and 802.11n moved from technology jargon to my everyday vocabulary. While reading through daily news headlines in my free time, I’ve noticed that I am frequently clicking on links to tech-related stories and am spending more time on tech websites and sections from the likes of Mashable and The New York Times – though I do still take my time reading through my faves such as Rolling Stone and Pitchfork Media.

While I didn’t know I would end up in the high-tech world, I’m glad that I found it - or that it found me. I was lucky enough to visit Breakaway back in April on a trip that one of my professors had organized. I didn’t know much about tech PR before that trip, but I liked what I heard from the team about the clients and the work. The office was bright and comfortable, and everyone was friendly and energetic. I knew that this was where I wanted to be after graduation.

Now that I’m here, I enjoy working in an environment where I learn something new every day. And, along the way I have become the go-to tech resource for my friends – telling them details about their wireless routers and waxing poetic on the endless capabilities of Bluetooth technology.

In the next two months, I’m really looking forward to learning more about the various clients Breakaway works with, as well as taking a lead role on projects for the accounts I am currently working on. My teams have given me great support so far and I can’t wait to start tackling even more new tasks.

Signing off from “techy” San Francisco,

-Stephannie
